BROKEN GROUND
2011-2015
Broken Ground depicts a fictional landscape situated on the outskirts of the city and characterized by a distinct interplay between man and nature. Inspired by the concept of borders and the observation of social and visual disparities associated with urban settings, the photographic series underscores the relationship between individuals and the environments they inhabit. Focusing on the notion of 'borderline', it examines how perceptions and behaviours regarding territory and ownership shape our understanding of place and space. Through this exploration, Broken Ground delves into contemporary social issues, particularly those intertwined with architecture and urban environment, with a focus on the youth demographic.
By merging images from diverse suburban areas in Portugal and Turkey, the series constructs a fictitious place that draws parallels between cultures and geographies, transcending Europe’s most extreme borders, and exploring the psychological and spatial boundaries that define contemporary territories.
